In SAND players are thrust into the desolate deserts of the fallen planet Sophie, embarking on a quest to uncover resources and treasures. To navigate this harsh terrain efficiently, players are provided with the ability to design and modify their own Trampler, a walking mech capable of traversing the islands that were once submerged beneath a vast sea.
The whole point of SAND is to become one with your Tramplers and explore a world full of remnants of the luxury of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in Sophie's post-apocalyptic world. Intense battles with other players create that unique feeling of being really close to the moment when you can finally take what you think should be yours.
The Trampler serves as the player's main base, both as a means of exploration and loot storage. Players are able to customize their tramplers - from interior design, to upgrading its power, armor, and weapons. Team up with other players to pool your resources together to create the ultimate movable base in a large open world.
Tramplers are large ship-like vessels with a movable chassis, in the 1870s they were used to transport construction materials and large loads during the construction of cities. They were designed specifically for Sophie to colonize so that they can be moved on both land and water simply by folding the "legs".
They were often led by workers from poor regions of the empire who went to the construction of Sophie as a source of income. Therefore, after the environmental disaster, tramplers became the main means of transportation in Sofie, because mostly the same wage earners, their descendants, fellow villagers, etc. went there. Later, tramplers began to be treated as an extension of themselves, like horses or favorite weapons, decorating them with charms, favorite jewelry and giving them an original and authentic look.
In an alternate history version of 1910, humanity had made significant advancements in space exploration thanks to the discovery of new energy sources. The Austro-Hungarian Empire led the way in conquering other planets, but a mysterious ecological disaster struck planet Sophie, forcing its settlers to hastily leave behind a once-resource-rich world.
So now Sophie is a place where the laws of the universe give you the opportunity to restore your own justice and get what you deserve for years of hard life on earth. However, you have to fight for everything, you have to prove that you are worthy of restoring justice. That you are smart enough to know your trampler and learn to accept the protection it can give you in this post-apocalyptic space. You have to show the most invisible in yourself, and then you will get everything you want. But, once again, you have to prove that you are worth it.
The game's characters originate from Galicia, a region within the Austro-Hungarian Empire predominantly inhabited by Ukrainians and Poles. During the early stages of colonization, the Kaiser promised the Galicians a significant portion of the planet Sophie, enticing them to volunteer as the primary labor force for constructing the cities that would eventually belong to them.
Despite the ecological disaster, the allure of owning their own space territories proves difficult to abandon. The most resilient and desperate Galicians, who have little to lose, resort to semi-legal means of reaching the planet, driven by their determination to rectify historical injustices and claim what they believe is rightfully theirs.
In addition to Galicians, our characters will also be those who come from large and small cities of the Empire - university teachers, half-crazy researchers, occultists, engineers and former soldiers. All the different types of outcasts have their own special interest in Sophie, because her mysterious disaster beckons everyone who is eager to reveal the ambiguous secrets of cosmic Austria-Hungary.
